Lighting Up My Life

The tree is up! Ian and Eva immediately started banging and throwing our ornaments around (the majority of which are Egyptian glass). Miraculously, none of them broke. However, Curt broke two ornaments while attempting to stop the kids from breaking them. We left the bottom 2 feet of the tree pretty bare and used some fleece blankets under the tree to give the ornaments a chance of survival.

You have sparkley kids!! :D We often used toys for the bottom half of the tree - or unbreakable ornaments (I had a bunch of apple ornaments). The kids were allowed to decorate and redecorate with 'their' half of the tree. Helped with the old cats too. We had a live tree with our old cats for their first Christmas and I swear, we have to use multiple tie-downs to keep the tree up. We have an artificial, fairly sturdy, tree now, but I am thinking that this year the glass ornaments will stay in boxes for the first few days... until the kittens get over the OMIGAWD WHATISIT ITSATREE OMIGAWD stage.

and where is a picture of the finished tree?? I LOVE that idea of stringing the lights around the kids.

PS. Cross your fingers- hopefully looking at a place in your building next week.

Didn't get a picture of the tree, but should.

I got some brass ornaments from Digla Copper in Maadi and some other sturdier ornaments for lower. Three kittens vs. the tree. That should be very entertaining!

CP- That would be great if you got into this building or at least the complex. The real estate biz is crazy.

We vetoed the idea of a tree this year, Thomas is just WAY too active and inquisitive. Instead we're hanging ornaments and garland around the house for the festive feeling! Not quite the same but good enough for now. Love your light pictures, I think I need to take some like that! ^^

Wow, where did you find everything or did you bring it all from the states? I didn't think you could find Christmas decorations in Korea. We don't do Christmas so it's not something we do a lot of research on but it would be nice to put up some lights sometime.

One thing to keep in mind, Christmas lights do tend to have lead on them so make sure the little ones aren't putting them into their mouths too much!

Hello from another mama in Korea (on vacation in the US right now).

We brought everything from the US (or Egypt), but I'll bet you can find most things here. Korean stores start decorating for Christmas in early November.

Thanks for the link! I signed up, just waiting to be approved. Hope it goes well, we tend to not fit in real well with a lot of parents between the religion and the parenting beliefs we have. I would like to find friends for my daughter where we are at but so far, it's been slow going. I just hope we don't move again, it takes SO long to get used to a new area and with me being pregnant, not something I really want to tackle right now.

BTW, I'm in Yongin-si, near Jukjeon Station. Well, I will be once I get back to Korea. :D

We have a pretty diverse group. Hope to see you on the boards. Enjoy your vacation.

I have my tree up but it doesn't have ornaments on it yet. Graham LOVES the tree and demands that I turn it on when it's off. I am thinking of not decorating the bottom half or buying cheap plastic somethings for it. Or putting a baby gate around it but that's ugly and it takes up space.

My mom has a lot of non-breakable ornaments for the bottom, but we don't, yet. Things made of wood, fabric, felt or plastic. She has a lot of plastic canvas ornaments as well. It is like large scale cross stitch using yarn. We made a lot of them as children. I should try to find the patterns when I go home and make some for our tree.

My mom and my sister made felt ornaments one year when we were kids because of the Christmas tree being pulled down. They figured that was the less expensive thing to do and they made some fairly cute ornaments too.
