About HypnoBirthing®
HypnoBirthing is as much a philosophy of birth as it is a technique for achieving a satisfying, relaxing and stress free birthing. HypnoBirthing teaches women and birthing companions the art and joy of experiencing birth in a safe, more comfortable manner for themselves and their babies. Through guided imagery and self-hypnosis women learn how to call upon their bodies’ own natural endorphins and thus eliminate or greatly reduce the need for medication. When a woman is properly prepared for childbirth and when the mind and body are in harmony, nature is free to function in the same well-designed manner that it does with women in other cultures and with all other creatures.
You will be fascinated as you view HypnoBirthing® videos showing laboring mothers, awake, alert and in good humor, as they experience safe, gentle birth – free of the Fear-Tension-Pain Syndrome. HypnoBirthing teaches a woman how to release all prior programming about birth, how to trust her body and work with it, as well as how to free herself of limiting thoughts and emotions that lead to pain-causing fear and resistant muscles.
HypnoBirthing helps women rediscover their natural birthing instinct. Moms are awake, aware, and fully in control, but profoundly relaxed as they bring their babies into the world.
“According to physiological law, all natural, normal functions of the body are achieved without peril or pain. Birth is a natural, normal physiological function for normal, healthy women and their healthy babies. It can, therefore, be inferred that healthy women, carrying healthy babies, can safely birth without peril or pain.”
Dr. Jon Dye, Easier Childbirth, Buffalo, 1891

The HypnoBirthing® Premise
For most of their lives, women have been inundated with the negative stories of other women’s birth experiences. Everyone, from their mothers, sisters, aunts, cousins, friends, and even strangers, wants to tell them the horrors of giving birth. They have been conditioned to believe that excruciating pain is associated with birth; and because of this, women today hold an unprecedented fear of giving birth. This extreme fear causes their bodies to become tense, and that tension prohibits their bodies from easily performing a normal physiological function. The result?--exactly what they feared most--long, painful birthings.
People who are drawn to this method of childbirth have long been searching for a way to help women give birth as calmly, safely, and gently as possible. Until HypnoBirthing, it almost seemed unattainable.
Through a very simple program of self-hypnosis and education, women learn to work through fear-based stories and misinformation, and they are helped to see birth as normal. They learn to trust that their bodies know how to bring their babies into the world in the calm and gentle way that Nature intended.

Doing the Work
When I start something new, I want the end result immediately. It is hard to believe that anything will make a difference and my fear of failure often leads me to lose interest and not "do the work" necessary to achieve the development of a new skill or goal. However, when I really set my mind to something and do the work, it is amazing how well it actually works.
I am applying this commitment to two pregnancy projects: exercise and Hypnobabies. I have been exercising almost everyday since my earlier exercise goals post. I am naturally thin without working out, so the motivation to do it is not that strong. It is hard to believe that it will make a difference. I do need to workout for stress reduction and strengthening, though. It is also good for better fetal positioning and I do not want another positioning problem that prevents a vaginal delivery. I need to build my endurance and after this delivery, I need to keep exercising so I can get into good shape instead of thin, yet, flabby. I have decided that there are enough benefits to exercise that I just need to do it. I am a little afraid that it won;t make a difference, that I will have another breech baby or transverse or posterior or something anyway because it happened last time, but I am exercising anyway because it has definite benefits and will give me the best chance for good positioning. The mental stuff will be dealt with by Hypnobabies.
Due to my husband's crazy travel schedule, we were not able to do the Hypnobirthing class here in Seoul. Fortunately, I found the Hypnobabies homestudy course which has two advantages over Hypnobirthing: we can do it on our own time in our own home and it is designed so that it can be used without the birth partner. Since I am going back to the States for the last few months of my pregnancy, I need something I can do by myself, especially in the event that I go early and Curt doesn't get back in time.
Reading testimonials, it seems that these programs work better for some than others. The difference: doing the work and choosing to use it during the birthing. Those who followed the program as instructed and practiced daily as instructed, had a lot more success than those who didn't. Though, it seems that even those who didn't follow it exactly or practice as much as they should have, did benefit from it. Also, the people who used the scripts during birthing had a lot more success than those who didn't. Seems simple enough, but not everyone chooses to use it or use it the whole time. Sometimes something unexpected happens which throws the mom off and she doesn't let the program get her back on track (or doesn't have it with her).
So, I will choose to commit to this program, to do the work, to use it and expect the best.

Hypnobirthing vs. Hypnobabies
I am signed up to take a Hypnobirthing class starting in a few weeks, but I've also seen theHypnobabies program. I don't really have a choice here in Korea, but if you are in the US, you should check them both out. From the little I have read, it seems Hypnobabies used an open-eyes method and seems to have more problem-specific scripts. Hypnobabies also offers a homestudy course.
Has anyone out there taken either course? Comments on which one is better?
******Update: B/c of scheduling conflicts and the fact that Hypnobabies seemed more geared to doing it without a partner and I will spend the last two months of pregnancy in the States, away from my husband, I decided not to do the Hypnobirthing class and went with the Hypnobabies homestudy course. Here is the link to my take on Hypnobabies after using it successfully for my VBAC.
Here is a comparison from Laura Lund, Hypnobabies instructor who used Hypnobirthing and then Hypnobabies and then became an instructor. Sheridan Ripley is a Hypnobabies instructor who followed a path similar to Laura's and here is her comparison.
