I made the dress. Again, I am a much better dress designer than seamstress, but it is wearable:

Sewing Lessons in Seoul: I Made It and It's Beautiful!

In my sewing class, I made a dress:

Now that Eva is walking it is almost impossible to get her to stand still, but her she is wearing it. I made it in size 2T so it should fit better next summer. She is size 12-18 months right now.

I am taking sewing lessons in a friend's house. There are three of us that set up our machines at the dining table and Mrs. Ahn, the teacher, assists us with our projects. She helps us make our own patterns and helps us through step by step. It is amazing how much I can accomplish in 2.5 hours! I leave Eva with a babysitter.

Mrs. Ahn can eyeball measurements and free-hand amazingly well. I struggle to cut or sew in a straight line! I showed her this dress and she made a pattern. I decided to make the neckline without the accent because I thought I would like it better and I do.

Now, the dress isn't perfect and I need to do some ironing and thread trimming to finish it off, but I actually finished something!

Mrs. Ahn speaks English very well. She teaches lessons in your home and also takes custom orders. If you want to learn to sew, I highly recommend getting a small group together and setting up some lessons!

More Baby Leg-Warmers

I bought a bunch of adult knee socks last fall and made one pair into baby leg-warmers and the rest of the socks have been sitting in my office/junk room until today. I made three more pair and these are a little better done than the other ones. I have a bunch more that are cut and ready to sew. I am going to start working on a simple block quilt next sewing session.

I Made Something, I Actually Made Something!

My friend Chalica and I are pathetic because we both own sewing machines and do not know how to use them. (Chalica is less pathetic than I am because we both also own cameras, but she actually knows how to use hers). Our friend, Jenny, showed us a very simple project that inspired us to break out the old machines.

Baby Leg Warmers Out of Knee Socks

Koreans seem to have a sock obsession because you can buy socks on the street everywhere. It is probably because they take their shoes off inside and so need to be more stylish with their socks. In any case, you can buy adult knee socks in Itaewon for less than 2,000 won per pair without negotiating. They offered us 6 pair for 10,000 won.

Then, you snip the sock foot off at the ankle.

Cut off the toe.

Cut of the heel.

Take the remaining band between the toe and the heel and fold it in on itself.

Stitch to the tube of the sock.

Zig zag over original stitching to secure.

Done.

Here is another set of instructions with a slight variation.

Anyway, she brought her machine over yesterday and we both got one leg warmer done before we screwed up the threading of our machines and had to stop for the day. Today, I finished the second leg and now have one pair done! The sewing ain't pretty and in all probability will have to be re-done after washing or wearing a few times, but it works!
